May 19, 2012 - Mass of Thanksgiving with Archbishop Dolan
Important News about OUR Good Shepherd School On January 10, Fr. Robert met with Archbishop Dolan, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, the Superintendent of Schools, and several other pastors of parishes with schools that had been designated in early November as at risk for closure. You will recall that we conducted two meetings to discuss the situation, to listen to thoughts and suggestions of parents and parishioners, and to present a plan for the continuance of Good Shepherd School. That plan highlighted increased fundraising, growing the enrollment, and utilizing the many gifts and talents of parents, parishioners and friends of Good Shepherd. After the final drafting of an alternate proposal was prepared, Fr. Robert personally delivered it to the Office of the Superintendent for consideration by the Archdiocesan Reconfiguration Committee on December 6, 2010. On December 15th, members of the newly formed Executive Committee for Good Shepherd School (Mary Singer, Fr. Ropbert, and alumni John Brennan, Richard Scarlata and Manny Ramirez) presented the plan in person to the Reconfiguration Committee. At a meeting this past week with the Archbishop, we were informed that Good Shepherd School will remain open! All of us, especially our students and parents, can be very proud of the fact that the Archdiocese of New York has placed a great amount of trust in our plan and our desire to work together to preserve and improve our school, providing for its continued growth and legacy into the future. Now more than ever, we need the encouragement, support, and willingness of the entire parish, each and every student and parent, and our neighbors to continue to assist us as we bring our plan to fruition. There is much work to be done. One of the most pressing needs, of course, is finding a new tenant to occupy the space that CUNY has rented in the building since 2005. Many heard the news in person at a Community Board 12 meeting on December 21, 2010, or read it in the December 29, 2010 edition of the Manhattan Times (page 2) that the City University of New York hopes to move as soon as possible to a new site. (You may view the article online at (www.manhattantimesnews.com). All leads from parishioners and friends to assist in the potential rental of the school annex (Cooper Street entrance) will be taken seriously and should be forwarded to Fr. Robert in writing at the parish office. In addition to renting the annex, increased enrollment will be essential. We wil have Open Houses on January 30 from 10am to 2 pm, February 3rd from 8:30am to 11am and from 1pm to 2:30pm and from 5pm-7:30pm, February 24th from 8:30 - noon and 1pm - 2:30pm and 5pm:7:30pm. We will have a history fair during Catholic Schools Week February 3rd from 5pm-7pm. New scholarships are now available please inquire at the school. Please join me in thanking God for this decision. At the same time, let us pray for the wisdom, strength, and courage needed to make this work for many years to come. Many thanks to all for your prayers and words of encouragement and support.
